Manushi members personally cleaning and removing the garbage piles behind the pilot project area which is a source of stench and mosquitos for both residents and vendors. We were physically prevented from maintaining cleanliness in the area by M.C. D. employees and those manning the railway crossing on the ground that citizens had no right to clean railway land! We persisted and succeeded in organising our own Cleaning Brigade and keeping municipal sweepersout who also collected Rs. 60 per month per vendor by way of bribe without doing much cleaning.
